Volunteers 2009

Hello! We are Project Sri Lanka Postgraduate Group 2009. Below is some interesting information about the 4 of us: who we are, our talents and interests, and why we are committed to going to Sri Lanka. We are so excited and looking forward to this summer in Moraketiara!

Jagruti

My name is Jagruti, I’m in my first year of a PhD in Philosophy which aims to understand people’s experiences of their environments.

I love going to the theatre, playing the piano and my guitar, travelling and cooking; but above all my passion is learning about people and their different world-views. Project Sri Lanka is an incredible opportunity to learn from a wonderful community by living with them and for a while becoming one of them. I hope to return their generosity by helping my village in any small way that I can.

John

Hi, my name is John and I’m studying for a Masters in Aeronautical Engineering.

I’m really excited about the prospect of being involved in something as worthwhile as project Sri Lanka. I have a keen interest in international development and I am looking forward to being part of a team with such a diverse set of skills and abilities. Project Sri Lanka is a great opportunity to build links with another community, enabling us to learn from another culture and share something of our own culture.

James

Hello, my name is James Loft and I’m taking a Postgraduate Certificate of Education training to be a primary school teacher.

The prospect of sustainably developing the local community, while expanding my own teaching skills is extremely exciting. My involvement in Project Sri Lanka stems from a desire to experience education in different countries and immerse myself in other cultures. This project provides the perfect opportunity to connect classrooms in the United Kingdom with their Sri Lankan counterparts for the personal development of all children involved.

Kim

I’m Kim and I am studying for a PGCE in Primary Education.

I love music and films and the arts in general and spend most of my time hanging out meeting new people. If I have a talent I’d say that it would be giving anything a go and jumping into things whole heartedly- I’m also quite organised underneath it all but that sounds quite boring! I can’t wait to go to Sri Lanka and become part of a global community of people. Education is my thing so I’m really excited at bringing part of my culture to the kids out there as well as learning from them and bringing back a part of their culture to the kids I teach in England!
