Positive Progress – 07.07.2013 by Jon Casey

This week has seen very positive momentum with the projects. Meetings going well and plenty of shopping trips for supplies have built up excitement for what’s to come. From a personal point of view it’s been great to make preparations for the Gardening plot project in Vikumgama and to go shopping for tools and equipment. This project has been requested by the people of Vikumgama and will involve establishing (at first) 6 or 7 plots to service a small group of houses each. Between us and the villagers it was decided that this was the best way to begin the project with the hope that even after we have gone they can continue to create plots together until every home that would like a plot can have their own. The villagers themselves wasted no time into organising themselves into groups of 5 and now we will begin on the first plot early this coming week. Ahead there is now a few weeks of hard work and heavy lifting to get the various plots ready for planting and then, with the help of the villagers, we will hopefully plant our first crops. One of the real successes we have seen come to life this week is the sports program. It was fantastic to be invited to help out with coaching sports at the Matara City home ground with the young people who train there and to see Oliver’s project take of so successfully with various requests for more football sessions already set up there. This will hopefully continue as the Sports project moves into coaching in the local village of Gandara this coming Wednesday and we look forward to the enjoyment we can bring to the children and young people there. I think this week has been a huge success and we look forward to pushing forward with our various projects in the coming weeks. To top it all off we had a great trip to the National Park at for a Safari to see some of the natural beauty Sri Lanka has to offer.
