15th July (Hayley)

Today was our last trip to our village for the week; it is safe to say we had become a custom to the bus rides!

They were a bit daunting at first as we did not know which ones to get on or where to get off. However I feel I have mastered the art of bus riding in Sri Lanka, after the falling over incident.

We taught the children the ‘Hello song’ today and they responded really well to it, they were amazed at the sight of Emma’ laptop. They joined in with all the actions and sang along sweetly.

We also went over previous days’ work, such as numbers 1-20 on the hopscotch, head shoulders knees and toes and the nursery rhyme ‘This little piggy’. The children had picked so much up in a week and I was really proud of them.

The teacher had done a great job teaching the children from her home before the school was opened. The children already knew lots of English nursery rhymes and songs, as well as numbers up to 20.

The after school clubs provided a great end to a lovely week. We began by teaching local house wives English; in areas such as greeting people, conversation and going to the shops. They did really well and picked it up at a good pace.

The group of young children had varied abilities but were still really responsive and sang the ‘Hello song’ with a lot of spirit. As it was the last day we decided to use the parachute and they loved it! Teaching simple words such as ‘up’, ‘down’, ‘under’ and ‘out’.

We ended the session with some parachute games, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope the children did also. I look forward to going back sometime soon.
