Saturday 7th to Monday 9th August

On Saturday after our hard week we had a relaxing day by the pool to enjoy a bit of sun tanning and relaxation. This was followed by an early start on Sunday morning to visit the market in the local town of Balangoda. Hannah and Rosie throwing themselves right into the culture purchased a beautiful saree each before heading around the busy markets. We managed to buy a large piece of wood to be able to take back to the village on Monday in order to fix the swings at the back of the school so the kids could play on them and buy some much needed black paint. After buying Sri Lankan sweets, spices and souvenirs we headed back to the university on a public bus only to find it was on a long journey heading for Columbo, so a couple of minutes down the road we had to stop for twenty minutes. At this point many beggars came onto the bus asking for our money and for any food in which we had. Eventually we got going again and relaxed by the pool in the afternoon before planning our sports day for the university and village which are taking place Wednesday and Thursday. we then sorted out all the equipment we had and who it was going to. after dinner we had to design the posters advertising the sports days as well as playing cards. We were all very tired by this point so we decided to go to bed.

On Monday all eight of us headed to the village in order to try and complete the painting of the school. Hannah finished the drawing as the rest of us painted and played with the kids who loved to watch. They all got a turn though when everyone put their hands prints on the wall next to the large Team Durham sign before signing the wall. As a memento the kids also painted their hands and put them on our T-shirts for us to take home with us.
