If there is one word that could sum up my experience in Sri Lanka so far it would be, ‘random’. A perfect demonstration is our adventure to ‘world’s end’ and back in under 48hours. On Monday we travelled to Sabaragamuwa University Campus to stay with the DUCK sports team. The journey itself was beautiful; beaches turned into dramatic hills and tea plantations and the heat began to drop (to our delight!).
Once arriving at Beliihuloya in the heart of the hill country, we took a look around the stunning university campus and met the friendly vice-chancellor who kindly set up accommodation and travel for us. We then spent some time with the sports students who seem to be doing a great job with a hectic sports schedule. Katie, Aimee and I were in awe that they were able to play so much sport in the heat; doing the hokey cokey just about finishes us off! Whilst relaxing by the pool minding my own business, I noticed something moving in my top. It didn’t take long to realise a spider was in the process of eating me alive and my only option was to frantically strip my clothes off much to the confusion of Aimee and some other bemused students.

After this ordeal we ate a nice meal with the sports students before heading off for an early start. This turned out to be more eventful than planned, with a slightly deranged academic being locked into the room next door. Despite the eerie scratching and banging, we managed to get a couple of hours rest before our 5am vehicle arrived. After surviving hairpin bends and pot holes we arrived at the silent and misty ‘Horton Plains’ where we began our 10k trek to ‘world’s end’. Luckily, the cloud began to clear and we found our way to ‘world’s end’; a sheer cliff face overlooking the vast hill country with stunning views. As I began to wander to take a better look, I was informed that I was entering a leopard’s den, so quickly re-joined the group! We also came across a stunning waterfall with a rainforest area where Katie managed to drop a shoe. After all this, we managed to make it back to Moon Bridge the very same day much to everyone’s surprise. Needless to say, we slept well that night!
