Thursday 16th July by Fiona

Today we went to the Gandarawatte school. In the morning we had a very filling Sri Lankan breakfast at the Monk’s house which involved rice, noodles, vegetables and lentil curry. The monk as usual was very welcoming and enjoyed fussing over us. Whilst we were stuffing our faces, we heard a family of monkeys run across the monk’s roof. As we all grabbed our cameras and ran to take pictures, the monkeys stopped in their tracks for a few seconds to stare at us. That didn’t really surprise us as we are getting used to being stared at, even the street dogs stop to stare! After the breakfast, we went to the school and were greeted with the children’s morning songs. We were then encouraged to sing to the children which always gets us a little nervous as the teachers giggle at our bad singing. After the giggles passed, we sat down with the children and made hanging caterpillars out of rolled up card and coloured paper. The children had a lot of fun getting messy with the glue. We all went outside to play catch and piggyback races. To finish off the day we sang songs and did the famous, ‘hokey cokey’.

After school had finished, we went back to the monk’s house for lunch. Even though we were still very full from breakfast we were encouraged to sit down for another two heavy courses. The enthusiastic monk did not quite grasp the concept of being full as he continued to pile more on the plate. Eventually the food piling had stopped and we said our goodbyes and waddled to our tuk-tuk to go home.
