27th August (written by Charlotte)

As today was one of our last full days in the village we were very keen to add the finishing touches to the murals we have painted on the outside of Gandarawatte’s community building.Unfortunately we awoke this morning to heavy rain which continued until lunchtime. We therefore decided that, as the wet weather kept us inside we should add some decoration to the inside of the building. After discussing designs we decided to paint the numbers 1-20 in large figures on two of the walls, with the letters of the alphabet on the other walls. While four of our group spent the morning helping to look after the pre-schoolers, the remaining three were able to carefully paint on the numbers and letters. We used bold primary colours and were really pleased with the striking result which we hope will function not just as decoration but also as a teaching aid. As the weather cleared up in the afternoon we were able to combine afternoon preparations for the cultural show with adding finishing touches to the painting on the outside walls. All in all, it proved to be an artistically productive day.
