2nd July (written by Lorna)

We woke up from our first night in Sri Lanka to a good breakfast at the YWCA hostel. This was followed by a visit to the British Council offices in Columbo, where we met Gill Westaway, the director in Sri Lanka, and were shown the facilities they have for English language learning. In the afternoon we were driven south to Moratuwa, where the headquarters of the Sarvodaya are. Sarvodaya is a Sri Lankan organisation that helps develop communities – it is currently working in 15,000 villages all over the country. We were also shown around their orphanage and hostel for young mothers, as well as their multi-faith meditation centre, which was very peaceful but full of mosquitoes! After dinner we watched a film about Sarvodaya’s work and then had an early night in their hostel.
