21st July (written by Sophie)

Today we met with students from the Faculty of Management Studies at Sabaragamuwa University for informal discussions on a range of topics including love and marriage, culture, economics, politics and education. For our first class we split into 5 groups with one student from Durham to approximately 20 Sri Lankan students. Although somewhat daunting at first, we all thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the students and found these sessions to be extremely interesting and informative, and from which we were able to learn a great deal about Sri Lankan culture, their education system, the students’ religious beliefs and the current political situation. We were also able to tell them about university life in England and reply to their many questions about our culture. In particular they were interested in our religious beliefs and knowing about our family backgrounds. Afterwards we were asked to make a small presentation on what we had learnt from the students, and in return they reported back on what they had learnt from us. We then repeated the session with second and third year students. Overall it was a valuable exercise which enabled us to share information about our differing countries and one which we look forward to repeating with students from the other 4 faculties that we will meet later this week.
