17th July (written by Maddie)

Today was a holy day known as ‘Poya’; a monthly celebration of the full moon. Consequently both Gandrawatte and Moraketiara schools were closed, so we used our free time to do some much needed planning. We spent a productive morning sharing ideas for the two ‘cultural shows’, we intend to present at the end of our time at the schools, and also made progress with our designs for decorating the Gandrawatte Community Centre. After that we had definitively earned a break, we caught a bus (that was luckily running despite it being a Poya day) to Mirissa beach near Welligama. The view was stunning and despite the occasional rain showers and waves, that inexplicably flowed both in and out simultaneously, we had a wonderful afternoon.
