13th July (written by Sally)

Perched high on a hillside the Centre for Human Development commands panoramic views over the jungle. An NGO working to educate the rural population in methods of organic agriculture, it presented a perfect complement to the recent symposium on Sustainable Development at Sabaragamuwa. In the morning we were treated to a step-by-step tour of rice production and somewhat more obscurely, mushroom farming – an initiative the Centre has pioneered to supplement the earnings of low income families. In the afternoon, upon the insistence of our companion and guide from the centre, Chantika, we travelled to Pinnewala, the world famous elephant orphanage. There we admired them bathing in the river, before on the return journey taking an elephant bath ourselves! Balanced on top ‘Nonah’ we received a thorough soaking, as she threw back her trunk, spraying us with water!
