12th July (written by Sophie)

Today was our first day off since we began teaching on Tuesday, and one week into the programme we are in need of some rest! We use the morning as a welcome chance to relax by the sea, heading into Matara late afternoon for a bit of exploring. We first visit Parey Dewa (Rock in Water) which is home to a small Buddhist temple and on which four monks live, then wander round the old part of Matara, stopping at the Dutch ramparts, which were originally intended to become a fort. We also visit a great batik shop called Jez Look Batiks and are all tempted by the beautiful sarongs and wall hangings on offer.

We decide today is the day for our first attempt at eating outside of our resort, and following the Lonely Planet’s recommendations we walk up and down the main road in Matara trying to find a good restaurant. Local food turns out to be much spicier than we have been eating so far, but is still very tasty and a nice change! All in all the day was well spent and we greatly enjoyed exploring our new home!
