Pelena: Week Four

This week more children have been attending the after-school club, including some of Muslim children whom we have encouraging to come along for some time. Highlights of the week included performances of plays that the children had written and a hilarious session of English party games including musical statues, pass the parcel and cutting up chocolate. Our morning home visits have gone well this week and we even had a cooking lesson from one of the mothers. We are looking forward to recreating some Sri Lankan curries upon our return to England. We met again with both the mothers’ groups and enjoyed singing and dancing with them. Some of them seemed to get the hang of ceilidh dancing very quickly while others most certainly did not!We were invited to a kiri dani – a celebration of a baby eating his first rice. The party started on Tuesday evening with the cooking of food for the ceremony and continued until morning when this food was distributed to friends and relatives and the eating of the rice took place. We also joined with some friends for an almsgiving at the temple to mark the third anniversary of their mother’s death. On Tuesday we joined Giulia and Jason in Ahangama and taught an extracurricular music lesson in the Dharmarama school where they work. We have been invited back next week to do another lesson. Giulia and Jason came to visit Palana on Thursday to see the DUCK preschool and join in with the party games. This week we have continued our programme of English lessons and work in the preschool. We are beginning to plan for the community day and cultural show which will mark the end of our stay in the village. We rounded off this week with a lengthy game of cricket on the beach with some of the older boys in the village.
