Jane Dennis, Diary Entry – 9th July

We awoke in our log cabin to the sound of wild animals outside. As it was my 20th birthday we had a birthday cake at breakfast and enjoyed a bit of a feast. After breakfast we proceeded to the Dambulla Cave Temples, which were a short drive away. We arrived to see the huge, gold Buddha statue, thought to be the highest ‘building’ in Sri Lanka. After a climb of a few hundred steps we finally reached the top and had the Cave Temples in sight. As we walked towards the caves, a group of monkeys approached us; a rather magical experience. The views from the summit were absolutely breathtaking. We had a guide to show us around the caves, which were fantastically decorated and so interesting to see. The huge Buddha statues inside the caves were carved out of the rock. It was so hard to contemplate as they were all so intricate and beautiful. We descended the hill to board the bus for our onward journey to Kandy. After a little while we called at a spice garden. A guide showed us around all of the produce they grew and we sampled some freshly made vanilla spice tea and cocoa sweetened with banana. We then had a short talk about the products they made at the spice garden and were all given a gorgeous massage, sampling some of the products. We arrived in Kandy to our accommodation, “Comfort Lodge”. After a short settling in period, we boarded the buses again for an evening trip to the famous Temple of the Tooth. After the amazement of seeing an elephant strolling around the grounds, we entered the Temple. The sounds and sights were fascinating. We looked around all of the different parts of the temple with a guide to enlighten us along the way. After leaving the Temple we travelled to a restaurant where we had a lovely celebratory meal, and another birthday cake! As it was such a full, hectic day we were all very tired and fell asleep straight away!
