Monday 23rd to Friday 27th August by Joe

Following the unfortunate cease of the Sri Sumangala project, we were able to expand the project to maintain a more formal teaching element, thanks to an invaluable contact gained through the monk at Gandarawatte: the charismatic Sisura.Sisura had accompanied a few of the team to the Sinharaja rainforest on the Sunday prior to the initiation of the two week programme, and so a quick glimpse of the fun and games to come was provided. The first Monday of the project consisted of a trip to Weligama, where we took on the role of the teacher for around 50 students aged 11-16. Songs such as ‘Reach for the Stars’ were taught to the younger children, whilst the deepest darkest depths of English grammar and pronunciation were broached by the older students. On the Wednesday and Thursday, we were fortunate enough to attend Sisura’s private lessons with university students. Pronunciation practise was the order of the day here, along with helping the subtle differences between a ‘stare’ and a ‘glance’. However, the programme was not merely all formal, but also encompassed a large degree of songs, music and dance via Sisura’s confident and charming students. A particular favourite was the Michael Jackson dancing that one future actor student serenaded us with! All in all, a very fun and worthwhile week; organised with much help from Sisura: a useful and enthusiastic contact for future projects.
