Wednesday 4th August by Liam

Today was another early start for the Sri Sumangla team. The day begun with me, Joe, Kara and Abi catching the bus to Weligama at about 8am, prepared to spend the day with two grade 11 classes. On arrival, we made our way straight to class 11C where we were told we would be starting the day. The class was about 20 in size and on entering the room, the girls all got very excited giving the impression that they were really looking forward to our lesson. We started off with a brief introduction of ourselves, followed by a warm up game of hangman and the English vocab game ” Fish, Fruit, Tree “. Quickly moving onto some grammar work, we taught them the categories of words such as nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs etc, and aksed them to think of some examples for each category. We then introduced conjunctives, and after showing the girls how to join sentences together, we asked them to create their own short story using the different types of words we had introduced to them.
On ending what turned out to be a very productive lesson, the girls wouldn’t let us leave without singing us a song. One of the girls bravely sang “wave the flag”, which sounded great when accompanied by her neighbors beat.
At 10:30am, we made our way over to the school canteen for some tea and delicious snacks. We were given a plate of local bites to try out , which was left empty at the end of our 20 minute break, courtesy of Joe and myself.
We then made our way over to class 11 for the second lesson of the day. Starting the lesson in the same mannor, we later moved on to a circle vocab game. This involved going around in a circle, with each person saying a word which began with the letter that the previous word ended with. We used this game as an opportunity to teach the girls some new vocabulary, and also have some fun.
The girls in both classes thoroughly enjoyed our company and at the end of each lesson, they were all asking for us to come back the following day. We also had a great time, and we look forward to returning to the school tomorrow to continue helping out in the classroom with some very bright and keen girls.
