Volunteers 2010

We are the sports students who are devoting our summer of 2010 to the people of the community of Puwakgahawela and the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. We will also be returning to Ihalagalagama, the village where Team Durham 2009 had such a wonderful time.

Rachael Ashworth

Hi im Rachael and I am currently studying sport in my first year at Durham University. I am part of the University netball team and also play college hockey. I enjoy participating in all sports and due to this I am currently undertaking my Netball Level 2 Coaching which will be an asset whilst coaching in Sri Lanka. I am a qualified lifeguard and also enjoy swimming as a hobby. In sixth form I also completed my Duke of Edinburg Gold Award which shows my determination and motivation to overcome challenges which will prove an essential skill to have in Sri Lanka. I am looking forward to the experience of helping others to give them the same opportuinites and fun times I have had through participating in sport.

Catriona Coutts-Wood

Hi, my name is Catriona Coutts-Wood (known as Coutts to most) and i’m a third year undergraduate studying BA Sport. I am passionate about netball and tennis both of which I still regularly play for college and university respectively. In addition, I am an avid sailor, although i’m not sure these skills will be transferable inland in Sri Lanka! I am very excited about going out to Sri Lanka and looking forward to coaching sport to communities in need. I’m sure it will be challenging but also life changing, and the experience of a new culture, eye opening.

Rosie Gaunt

My name is Rosie Gaunt and I am currently a third year studying Sport at Durham University.

I have a passion for sport, in particularly rowing but I also enjoy rugby, rounders and netball. My adventurous side has also introduced me to sports such as water skiing and sky-diving! I have rowed at a high level for both my school and University. I represented Great Britain at junior level and most recently in Poland at the EUSA Championships. I love team spirit and working with others to reach goals.

Although being a late comer to sport at the age of 14, I became addicted to training and experiencing all the benefits that sport can provide – healthy body and lifestyle, increased work ethic and most importantly to me, the friends that can be made through Sport. I feel proud and privileged to be representing Durham University and going out to Sri Lanka as part of the team to help make a difference through Sport, something that I am very enthusiastic about and also to help enrich the lives of young children. It will also be great to gain an insight into different cultures and traditions over there.

My sporting interests are cricket and hockey. I am currently playing for Durham City for hockey and previously played for the Isle Of Wight in both hockey and cricket.

Going to Sri Lanka will be an amazing experience and i am really looking forward to going. In Sri Lanka we are working with people of all ages providing them with many sporting opportunities and this will be a very big challenge which I feel will be very enjoyable one.

Jess Walker

My name is Jess Walker I am a first year sport student. My two main sports are swimming and football, I used to swim at a county level and I play football for Butler College. I enjoy virtually all sports though and have regularly taken part in hockey, tennis, gymnastics, badminton and athletics in the past. I have previously travelled around China moving from Hong Kong to Shanghai to Beijing in which I watched the Olympics in 2008. I really enjoyed experiencing a culture that was in total contrast to ours and this has made me want to travel and experience different cultures more, which is what initially attracted me towards Sri Lanka. Also, I thoroughly enjoy coaching sport as well as taking part and believe it is an excellent way to help with the redevelopment of the country. I am really looking forward to the experience.

Elinor Woodcock

My main sports are football and netball which I regularly compete in for teams at Collingwood college. I also enjoy playing rounders, hockey and athletics. I have completed my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award which was extremely good fun but also rather challenging at times.I am a qualified football referee, football coach and netball coach. I feel that our time in Sri Lanka will be a life changing experience which will bring two cultures together.
