Volunteers 2011

Daniel Bank

Hello! I am Daniel Bank and I am second year sports student.

I am a very keen sportsman. I love sports and I will play anything if someone teaches me the basic rules. As a result I have learned a lot of different sports. My main sport is definitely football. But at university I am also regularly playing basketball and the pub sports (darts and pool). I cannot wait for the Sri Lanka trip it will be a great experience and will be a platform to help me to build on as I want to become a physical education teacher.

Matt Chandler

Hi, my name is Matt Chandler and I am a 2nd year Sport Student at Durham University.

I am currently captain of Collingwood College Hockey Club, I am a level one hockey coach, level one football referee and a junior sports leader.

I am really looking forward to going out to Sri Lanka because I think it will be a invaluable opportunity to experience the differing culture they have.

Jonathan Harding

My name is Jonny Harding and I am a 2nd year Sport student at Durham University.

My main and favourite sports are rugby and cricket, both of which I play at a high standard. I also, play rugby for the University. I am also a qualified Level 1 coach in both of these sports, and also hold this qualification in basketball. I am aiming to do a Level 2 award in rugby before we travel. I really enjoy coaching, providing opportunities for people and seeing their enjoyment are things that really excite me.

Going to Sri Lanka will be an absolutely amazing experience, living in a different culture will be a real eye opener and I simply cannot wait.

Kirsty Irvine

Hi my name is Kirsty and I am in my third year studying Sport.

My main sports are rugby, hockey, rowing and netball.  I am very excited to be sharing my passion for sport with the students in Sri Lanka.  I feel very lucky to be given, what I know will be an incredible experience and hope to share with others as much as I know I will gain from this experience.  I am also looking forward to experiencing new cultures, meeting new people, and having a great time with the rest of the team.

Katherine Jacks

My name is Katie Jacks and I am a first year sport student. The main sports I participate in are athletics and gymnastics. Furthermore I hold coaching qualifications in both of these as well as being a National Pool lifeguard.

I have previously travelled to New Zealand and Fiji on a sports tour playing netball and hockey against schools in these countries. I am intrigued by the atmosphere different countries have towards sport thus one of the main reasons I was attracted to the Sri Lanka project. I am excited about the challenges ahead and the prospect of making a difference to the country of Sri Lanka through sport.

Pascale Metcalf

My name is Pascale Metcalf and I am a first year student at Durham University studying sport. I have been involved in sport ever since primary school, taking part in a large variety of activities from hockey to scuba diving. I currently row and play badminton for my college in Durham, another of my extracurricular activities include volunteering in local primary schools as a netball coach. I believe this will help to provide me with the coaching skills and knowledge I will need to coach in Sri Lanka.

Going to Sri Lanka will be a once in a life changing experience which I can’t wait to be a part of.

Beth Thomas

Hi, my name is Beth and I’m currently in my first year at Durham University, studying sport.

I enjoy all aspects of sport; playing, watching, coaching and (occasionally) officiating. My main sport is netball, I currently play for the University netball team, Junior Team Northumbria and Welsh Netball High Performance Hub. I also enjoy playing hockey and watching rugby. Swimming is another interest of mine and I am a qualified lifeguard.

I am thoroughly looking forward to going to Sri Lanka and believe it is an excellent way to help with the redevelopment of the country. I feel that our time will be very well spent and it will be a life changing experience.

Jessica Regan

Hi my name is Jessica Regan, and I am currently a second year BA Sport student at Durham University.

I am very excited at the prosepct of going to Sri Lanka and widening my coaching experience whilst learning about a new culture. I love all sports, however my main ones are netball and dance… I played University Netball in my first year and now I am in the University Dance Troupe. I am also the Podium Scholar this year, which involves sport related teaching to children from the local area on a weekly basis; this has been an invaluable experience which I feel will be very useful. I have achieved my Gold Duke of Edinburgh award before coming to university which was certainly challenging at times, and proves my determination. I hope to take all of my experiences, knowledge and enthusiasm to Sri Lanka and make a difference.
