Diary 2008

We are delighted to be continuing our teaching and community support work at Moraketiara school through the summer of 2008.

The 15 students supporting the village of Gandarawatte are traveling to Moraketiara in small groups on a regular basis to teach English and do a variety of other support activities with both pupils and children.

Generally the first sessions of the day involve working with the lower grades (aged 6 to 11) on English vocabulary and the learning of spoken English. This is done largely through informal methods including word games and songs.

A generous lunch is always provided by families in the Rotary Community Corps for which our students are deeply grateful.

In the afternoons, teaching takes place with children in the upper grades (11-16 years), and discussions with the teachers themselves is all integral to the English teaching support for the school as a whole.

Once again, a cultural show is being prepared which will incorporate contributions from Moraketiara pupils and Durham students, working together in a truly meaningful cultural exchange.

Diary entries relating to the students work at Moraketiara will be found on theĀ Gandarawatte diary pages of the student involvement section of this website.
