Friday 17th July by Franky

Today we experienced the swapping of positions again with AJ, Laura S, Laura B and myself leaving for the picturesque Ihalagalagama village, Andy and Louisa helping in the Belihuloya school and Sam and Emma staying in the University. Unfortunately some miss-communication between parties led to the group of four being directed away from Ihalagalagama, where we had agreed to meet Professor Joy Palmer-Cooper. Whilst this was an immediate disappointment there was little time to dwell on the situation as we were asked to take care of a pre-school class within Sabaragamuwa University grounds. The lively and adorable children here surprised us all with their impressive British nursery rhymes- many of which I have long forgotten! It was a pleasure to be working with such animated youngsters.During these hours Emma and Sam had been putting the university students through their paces with a morning fitness programme, whereas Andy and Louisa had finished singing and dancing in their school and had arrived back for lunch. Indeed it is at this time that we all exchange morning stories and realize once more how rewarding the project is.

After lunch the team were able to appreciate a few hours of break, after which Sam, Andy, Laura B and I provided an informal English speaking lesson with some members of staff. The process of describing yourself, your hometown and your family to people involved in the project was now becoming second nature! With no time to lose after the completion of this session, we were able to witness the delights of the student aerobics and dance session in the badminton hall, led by AJ, Laura S, Emma and Louisa. Some interesting and innovative moves were shown by all, however I didn’t get the impression it was tailored for the faint hearted!

A long day’s work was soothed by a Joy Palmer-Cooper and her husband who hosted a fantastic meal in the evening. Thank you Joy!
